Puccini may have felt a bit outside his "comfort zone" when commissioned a "lighter" opera. The unusual composition history, and the less-than-ideal, derivative, libretto, didn't help. Yet, the immense skill and talent of the mature Puccini produce beautiful, sensuous music that "melts in the ears"
